For individuals or SME organizations, a surveillance solution can be costly. Moreover, you can make the layout of such a system as complex as you want. Synology therefore comes with an all-in-one solution, the NVR1218.

The Synology NVR1218 offers you a complete solution to organize the surveillance of your organization. The device has a slim design and has a sliding system to place the 3.5-inch SATA HDDs, two of each a maximum of 10TB.

Connections

On the back of the system you will find a multitude of ports, a 1GbE RJ-45 port for your network, two USB 2.0 ports, a USB 3.0 port, an eSATA port, an audio in and output port and an HDMI port. You will also find a com port on the back. That is an interesting addition, because it allows you to integrate your cash register system into your surveillance network. This immediately pulls what you sell with what you see visually. This will be especially useful in the catering industry, but also appeal to small retailers.

Installation

The installation of the system is reasonably straightforward. It supports up to a maximum of twelve cameras, with four camera licenses included with the system. A nice addition is that you can install the system completely outside your network, which benefits the security. For this Synology has delivered a dongle to the NVR1218.

Surveillance Station

The network video recorder runs on Synology’s own Surveillance Station, version 8.1. This allows you to flexibly set up your own surveillance system and keep an eye on your video streams. It is also possible to include an intercom system with audio support in your system, for this you will also find audio inputs and outputs on the NVR1218. Images up to 1080p are supported. If you want to monitor more streams at the same time, you have a resolution of 720p for a maximum of 12 channels, each running 30 frames per second.

The management of the video streams works very intuitively and pleasantly. You can quickly find desired images via a timeline and the archiving of the images works fine through Synology’s Archive Vault. The NVR1218 can also be expanded with the DX517 if you need more storage. You then get five additional stations with which you can set up a balanced storage method via various raid configurations.

Remote surveillance

With the DS cam app from Synology you have the possibility to keep an eye on your streams while you’re on the go. This also works flawlessly. Moreover, you can also communicate two-way via the audio interface of the surveillance system. It is also nice that the app allows you to receive notifications via push, based on rules that you have set yourself in Surveillance Station. This way you will always be kept informed of the object that is being monitored and you can respond quickly.
