During a teaching fair in Chicago, Apple today announced a new iPad. The renewed 9.7-inch iPad supports the Apple Pencil. This stylus was first put on the market two years ago, but only worked on more expensive models. Pencil support is now also available on a cheaper model. The stylus will not be included with the purchase, but is optionally available for a price of $ 99.

The renewed iPad runs on an A10 Fusion chip. This is the same chip as in the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus . According to Apple, this chip makes the new 9.7-inch iPad many times more powerful than any Chromebook. A hefty sneer towards Google of course, that yesterday with Acer one similar Chrome OS tablet announced. Furthermore, the updated 9.7-inch iPad features Touch ID, a FaceTime camera, a battery with a capacity for 10 hours of use and a camera at the back of eight megapixels. Since Apple focuses specifically on education with the 9.7-inch iPad, the software package will also be adapted. For example, Apple is making new versions of iWorks apps such as Pages, Numbers and Keynote with support for the Apple Pencil. There will also be new augmented reality apps to the iPad. For example, there is the Froggipedia app, with which students can virtually dissect a frog. According to Apple, learning with augmented reality will ensure that education is ready for the future.

For teachers, Apple comes with the Schoolwork app. This allows teachers to send messages to the students and distribute homework for example. Students can also keep track of the progress of the pupils during their homework. Students also have access to more storage in iCloud. Although Apple focuses on education, the ordinary consumer can of course also get started with this iPad.

The new 9.7-inch iPad launches today in the United States for a price of $ 329. For schools, the purchase price is $ 299. A price in euros is not yet known. This week the new iPad 9.7 inch will also be available in the Netherlands.
